- Friday, 6 Oct 2006
The anti-online gambling bill has recently passed through the Senate, after it was attached by the Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist to the Ports Security Bill. Now, in order to become an actual law, the bill only needs to be signed by President George Bush. Sadly for the online gambling industry, it is very likely that the President will indeed sign the bill before the elections to Congress that are expected in the beginning of November.
Even though the online gambling industry has gone through some difficulties this year, such as the arrests of the industry executives David Carruthers and Peter Dicks, most of the experts did not believe the bill against online gambling would pass the Senate in time. But as Bill Frist was able to attach it to the more crucial Ports Security Bill, the process was sped up. Frist explained his attitude and the reason for passing the bill: "Gambling is a serious addiction that undermines the family, dashes dreams and frays the fabric of society. For me, the bottom line is simple: internet gambling is illegal."
There are, however, some of the online gambling industry analysts that the real reason for banning online casinos is the determination to limit the money flow to overseas-owned gambling organizations. Although banks have mentioned in a strong imposing the new measures is expensive and not practical, the bill was still passed and now the law will require financial institutions to block electronic funds for online gambling companies. | |
