Costa Rica’s Vice President is in favor of protecting the gambling industry online, and has openly expressed this to the media and public. Laura Chinchilla, the Vice President, has openly voiced her concerns over what had happened with Bet On Sports and the closure that resulted in the loss of hundred of jobs. Gambling online seems to be a major focus for this politician.
‘The Bet on Sports (situation) impacted a certain sector of Costa Rica,’ commented a source. ‘She said they (The Costa Rican government) are behind the industry. It was the best meeting I have ever attended with the politicians.’ Though mention of a tax was brought up during the meeting, it was done so in passing. Ms. Chinchilla sincerely wants to form some type of regulation within Costa Rica for the gambling industry online that would benefit it and those industry employees.
Costa Rica's largest gambling employer online, Bet On Sports, closed its operations completely last month. The gambling company downsized over 800 employees in the process. The online gambling industry is among the highest paying in Costa Rica after the telecommunications sector. This is why it is easy to understand the reasoning behind the Ms. Chinchilla’s support and desire to protect the gambling industry. How this situation will unfold in this Central American country is still unknown. However, Ms. Chinchilla sees the online gambling industry as one that can bring a great source of revenue and jobs for the people of Costa Rica. | |
