All throughout this week we have been providing our readers with information on all the different variations of sports gambling wagers. This time, we’ll focus on money line gambling. A money line wager is also regarded as a straight bet, since it involves the outcome of a particular game. A money line bet is gambling on either the underdog or the favorite to winning the match. Bookmakers use the minus sign (-) to indicate the gambling odds given to the favorite, and the plus sign (+) in case of the underdog.
In order to understand how it works, consider the following example. The New England Patriots are regarded as a -130 favorites to win a game versus the Seattle Seahawks who are given +140 odds to win the game. If you are picking the favorite New England Patriots, you’ll have to wager you must bet $130 in order to win $100. In case you pick the underdog Seahawks, you would have a $100 bet will earn you $140 (in case they win). See how it works?
The underdog receives more favorable odds, because they are not the favorites to win the game. This is why you stand to win more money by gambling on the underdog. This is how the online gambling site balances things. It makes more sense that gambling on the favorite team will yield a lower return, since the odds are in your favor.
